Background
My name is Lewis Barnie, I am 17 years old and I attend Grange Academy. I live in Kilmarnock and play football for Kilwinning Rangers 2004s. I have been part of the Junior Sports Council for a few years now and have been in my school sports council since s1. I have recently qualified as a football referee and enjoy this as a new hobby/passion.
How I Got Involved In Sport
From a young age I have always had an interest and real affection for sports and being outside. From a young age I remember joining Bonnyton Thistle FC in primary as all of my friends played there. That got me started really and everything kicked off from that point. I now sail, fish, mountain bike, hill walk, play basketball and football and it just goes to show how you can start with very few sports and get involved with so many more if that is what you're interested in.
Why I Joined The Junior Sports Council
I was part of the sports council at my school and after showing a keen interest I was asked if I would like to join the East Ayrshire Junior Sports Council. I took this amazing opportunity as I love to make a difference and impact the life of others as positively as possible. I knew that by joining the junior sports council I could make the voice of the young person heard. I also knew that many courses were offered to members which is a bonus meaning I have extra qualifications which look brilliant on my CV.
Advice For Young People Looking to Do The Same
I would highly recommend taking this opportunity as the role is so rewarding when you see the positive impacts your decisions and ideas have had on the local community. When starting out take every course offered to you and get as involved as you can. Be confident in your own ability, help your fellow members and communicate well with them. Also don't be afraid to ask for help or support as there are so many people within the sports council willing to give you help and assistance. Also enjoy it as much as you can !
What next?
Scottish ClubSport has developed a Youth Panel Toolkit and supporting documents to support Sports Councils and ClubSport networks in recruiting and developing young people on a committee/board. We are also currently planning a webinar and further training (dates TBC) to bring this toolkit to life.
If you would like to find out more about how to engage young people in your activities, find out more about future webinars and workshops or if you are a young person (under 25 years old) and would like to support your local Sports Council and ClubSport network, please contact ndm@scottishclubsport.co.uk for more information.
